Thirty Six App Update + Giveaway!

Welcome to analog on your iPhone and iPad. That’s right, get the sensation of shooting with a film camera on your iPhone/iPad with the Thirty Six app. (App Store: $1.99)

Over a year and half ago iPh0 reviewed and gave away codes to this brilliant app here. Today we are covering a few updates within the app and also giving away promotional codes to obtain the app for free (details will be towards the bottom of this post).

Version 2 through 3.0.1 brings a major feature worth mentioning. You can now create your own roll of films. By adjusting saturation, brightness, contrast, vignette and color channels you now have the ability to control and mimic films of yesterday. In addition to this the user also has the option to name the film and select the film count of either 36 or 12 frames of exposure. Setting your film to 12 frames will create a roll of square photos.

create your own film!

Also in this update the user will notice IU has been revamped to resemble the sleek and cleanness of iOS 7+. Although this feature is beautiful it does lose the analog feel of holding a film camera. The user will miss the film camera leatherette design that use to appear while in camera mode.

UI update V2-V3.0.1

V1 with leatherette

The main thing to note is Thirty Six is still the top camera replacement app to bring ” digital film” to the iPhone by slowing down the process and having you think about what you want to shoot to make you a better photographer. And, Thirty Six is still the only camera app to have the coolest feature not seen in any other app, a contact sheet!

Thanks to Gary, I have twenty (20) promo codes to give away! To obtain a code you should be following the @ThirtySixApp twitter and in the comment section of this post please tell us why you would like a code to receive Thirty Six for FREE. Twenty (20) winners will be selected at random and must appropriately comment to win a code (don’t just say “I would like to try it” or of the sort)!

  1. Started photography with film in the 70’s where you had to think before shooting. Would like to try Thirty Six and see if you get the same feeling.

  2. Started my photography journey in the 70’s with film. Then moved to darkroom, contact sheet and the printing. Remember the challenges that this brought. Thirty Six looks like it brings back that experience in a very creative manner.

  3. I’ve been a photographer for 45+ years but made the shift to mobile – exclusively – 4 years ago. Showing a lot of work now and am on my way to several openings and to teach a master class on how and why other photographers should “convert” to mobile. It would be fun to “restrict” my shooting to a film and see how that affects my creative process. Also fun to play with this with students… Curious!

  4. Hey, I blog my own work and also the work of other mobile photographers at iphoneartgirl.com and joyofiphoneography.com. If you would give me a few codes, I’d give some away on the Joy site, if you think that would help you spread the word. Just an idea…

  6. I started shooting with my iPhone in 2009 and I looked into traditional photography immediately. But I’ve never had experience to create my art with darkroom, contact sheet and the printing. Seems, it would be nice if I could touch to this magical world as well as improve my skills with Thirty Six, having me think about the shoot process from A to Z.

  7. As a long time film shooter I contiually try to restrict how I shoot. Taking the approach of capturing images with care and thought. I believe it would be a cool app to check out from that same perspective. Slow down, be deliberate when you’re creating an image. 😊

  8. I am always fascinated by photography apps that recreate past devices with a modern twist, this app being one of them. ThirtySix definitely requires you to think before you shoot, as someone said in a previous comment. I’d like to give it a go if I’m lucky enough to get one of the codes. Thanks!

  9. It’s interesting how we are using all this new technology to replicate workflow of the past. Sometimes you have to slow yourself down to move forward. It would be very interesting to try this app and reacquaint myself with patience. It’s back to the future!

  10. The promise of an analog feeling is always tempting so let’s see if it can hold on to what it promises. No more to say. After all it’s rather difficult to justify why you would want an app that you don’t have, except that the Iphoneographer has a curious nature for everything that could enhance his/her experience. That’s it ;)

  11. Hello, I’m analog camera user and semi-pro photographer.
I love a film, but film industry is dying as you know. So I’m tring many software like vsco film preset for photograph.
Unfortunitly, I’ve never heard thirtysix app, but I think that it’s attractive.
Can I get the chance I try it??
    I hope so I will… :)

  13. Hi

I’ve heard nothing but good things about the Thirtysix app, and as a keen iPhotographer who is still seeking the ideal app that reproduces the black and white photo I’m seeking. The idea of shooting and waiting rather than wham bam thank you mam will give me more time for the important side of photography, getting the shot in.

I’d like a code because I’ve had this app on my wishlist since you first posted about it. These days I’d like to wait a little to see if an app will be updated before acting too fast and getting it when it first comes out. Awesome update and it makes me want this app even more. Thanks in advance and good luck to me! :-D

  15. I’m intrigued at the idea of creating my own rolls of film and love the contact sheet idea, so I would really like to experiment with Thirty Six and feel what it’s like to recreate the analog era on my mobile device. Would love a code to have a go at it.

I feel it cheapens social media posts to use an external camera and does not reflect the heart of what people want in social media: immediacy. This app looks amazing and I would love to use it for my clients!

  17. As the social media manager for several companies (including the largest church in America) I would love to use this app to post to our sites. I feel it cheapens social media to use an external camera and does not reflect the heart of what social media users want: immediacy. This app seems like a happy resolution (pun intended) to having professional pictures taken from an iPhone and immediately placed on social media sites.

  18. I’d really like to get a code, I love photography, and I think that these applications are and feel closer to the most photographed, not just click and have a picture, but you have to think about how and what to photograph, practice shooting angle where and how light falls
